Wikis
Your story bible. Entries and categories, pictures, quick facts and other names, [[ links from your chapters, hover previews, mentions, and list, gallery and table views.
A wiki is your story bible: the people, places, objects and terms of your project, kept where you can look them up while you write. A list of names with a sentence each is a perfectly good wiki; everything else here is there when you want it.
The layout
- The index (left) holds everything in the wiki as a tree, with search at the top and New entry and New category at the bottom.
- The page (right) shows whatever you clicked: an entry, a category, or the whole wiki's overview when you click its name at the top of the index.
The panel button at the top of the index hides it for more room. In a narrow space, such as split next to a chapter, the index becomes a full-width list and entries open over it with a back arrow.
Entries and categories
- New entry makes an entry inside the category you have open, or at the top level. Type its name and press Enter to start on the body.
- New category makes a category in the same place. Categories can hold subcategories.
- Organize: drag rows in the index by their grip (a little to the right to put a row inside the category above). Right-click a row, or use ⋯ on a page, for color, rename, move to, duplicate, export and delete.
- Collapse a category with its arrow. The wiki remembers what you folded.
You don't need a category before you make an entry.
An entry
Entries are always editable; there's no edit button.
- Title: click to change it.
- Also known as: other names and nicknames, like "the Widow". Click + Add alias (once there's one, + Add). They count everywhere names do.
- Picture: Add image puts a picture at the top right. Images up to 10 MB are resized automatically, so phone photos are fine.
- Facts: the box under the picture holds short facts like Age, Role or Home. Click Add field, type a name, press Enter, then fill in the value. If a value is the name of another entry, an arrow beside it jumps there.
- The body: the same formatting as a text file, plus pictures. The first paragraph is set a little larger, the way an encyclopedia entry begins.
Facts for a whole category
Open a category and look under its title for Facts for entries here. Add Age, Role and Home there and every entry in the category, and its subcategories, gets those rows ready to fill in. A category also has a one-line description, shown wherever it's listed.
Linking
There are two ways to link to an entry from a chapter or another entry:
- As you type: type
[[and start typing a name. Pick from the list with ↑/↓ and Enter. If nothing matches, Create makes a new entry with that name, so you can link before you've written it. - From a selection: select words, click Link, choose Wiki Entry and pick one. Use this when the link text should differ from the entry's name.
To link an entry to a file instead, drag the file from the drawer into the entry's text (on a computer). See Links.
Hover any wiki link, in a chapter, an outline row or another entry, and a preview card shows the picture, where the entry lives, its other names and its first lines, with Open entry.
Mentions
You don't have to link anything for the wiki to notice a name. In a chapter, any word that matches an entry's name or other names gets a faint dotted underline: hover it for the preview, click it to open the entry. Your text never changes, so exports show plain words.
- Matching respects capitals ("Rose" matches, "rose" doesn't), and names shorter than three letters are ignored.
- The Detect switch at the bottom of an entry turns mentions off for that entry, handy for names that are also ordinary words.
At the bottom of every entry:
- Linked from: chapters, outline rows, cards, grid tiles and entries that link here.
- Mentioned in: each chapter that contains the name, with a count. Click one and it opens with Find already searching for the name.
- Links to: the entries this one links to.
Three ways to view a category
On a category page, the switch beside Entries chooses the view. Each category remembers its own.
- List: names and the first lines of each entry.
- Gallery: cards with the picture, two facts and a short excerpt.
- Table: one row per entry, one column per fact. Click a cell and type to change a fact without opening the entry.
Finding things
- Search at the top of the index filters as you type, through names, categories and entry text.
- Go to wiki entry… in the command palette jumps to any entry from anywhere in the project.
- In a chapter, the palette's Create wiki entry from selection… makes an entry from the words you've selected and links them.
With the wiki in front and your cursor not in text, ↑/↓ move through the index, Enter opens, → / ← expand and collapse, F2 renames and Delete deletes (it asks first). Cmd+Enter makes a new entry, Cmd+D duplicates and Option+↑/Option+↓ step through the index.
Export
Right-click an entry (or ⋯) and choose Export for one entry, or Export Wiki in the file options for the whole wiki, as Word, Markdown or plain text. Other names and facts come along between the title and the body. Word keeps formatting best.
