Cards
Index cards in sections, for scenes, beats and loose ideas. Color them, size them, link them, move them between sections, and export them as a spreadsheet.
A card stack is a set of index cards, grouped into sections. Use one for scene beats, a corkboard of ideas, research snippets or anything you want to shuffle around before it becomes prose.
Sections
A new card stack starts with one section. Each section has its own row of controls:
- Rename: click the section's name and type.
- Collapse: the arrow at the left.
- Move Section Up / Move Section Down: the arrows next to it.
- Add Card, Decrease Card Size / Increase Card Size (small, medium or large cards) and Delete Section on the right.
Add Section is in the file's header, along with Hide Card Titles (cards show just their text), Switch to Vertical View (one column instead of a grid), undo and redo.
Cards
- Add a card: Add Card in a section, or Cmd+Enter in the section you're in.
- Write on a card: click into its title or text, or select it and press Enter. Press Esc when you're done.
- Reorder: drag a card to a new place, in its section or another.
- Select several: Shift-click or Cmd-click, then act on them together.
Click a card once to select it, and its toolbar appears above it:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Card color | Color the card to show threads, points of view or status. |
| Link / Open | Link the card to a file, a wiki entry or a web address, then open it. |
| Switch view | On a linked card: flip between the card's text, the linked file's name and its description. |
| Remove link | Unlink the card. |
| Move to section | Send the card (or all selected cards) to another section, no dragging needed. |
| Duplicate | Copy the card. Cmd+D |
| Add to Scratchpad | Copy the card's text to the Scratch Pad. |
| Delete | Remove the card. Cmd+Delete |
From the keyboard
Arrow keys select a card and move around the stack. Enter edits the selected card, Esc stops editing or deselects, and Option+↑/Option+↓ jump to the previous or next section. Cmd+Z undoes.
Scratch Pad and captures
Drag a note from the Scratch Pad onto a section to turn it into a card. On your BYOK, a ::card line followed by some text arrives as a card in your Captures inbox, ready to drop into a stack. To give it a title, make the next line title: and the title (or the title in [square brackets]).
Export
Export Card Stack in the file options downloads a spreadsheet (.csv) with one row per card, which opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. It keeps your words, not the exact look of the stack.
