Projects

Create projects, give them a color and an icon, favorite the ones you use most, sort, filter and arrange them, pick up where you left off, and rename, recolor or delete them.

Works inWebDesktopMobile

Projects are the top level of Studio: a project holds the files for one body of work, such as a novel, a journal, a course or your client work. You need at least one project to make files, and you can have as many as you like.

Projects line up with your BYOK too: each Studio project is a project folder on the device, and projects you create on the BYOK appear in Studio when it syncs.

The Projects page

When you open Studio you land on Projects: every project as a tile, with its name, color and icon. Favorites sit in their own row at the top; the rest follow under All Projects, in the order you choose (see Sort, filter and arrange). New projects start at the front.

The Projects page. Colors and icons are yours to choose.

To get back here from inside a project, click Projects in the breadcrumb at the top left, or the back arrow next to it. On mobile, tap the back arrow.

Continue writing

Above the tiles, Continue writing shows the file you last wrote in: in any project, on any device (web, desktop, phone or your BYOK), with its project and when you last edited it. Click it (on mobile, tap it) to open that file in its project.

It appears once you've written something. While you're filtering projects, the filter summary takes its place.

Sort, filter and arrange

  • Sort: click the sort button at the top right of the tiles (it shows the current order) and choose Custom order (your own), Recently edited (where you wrote last comes first), Name (A to Z) or Date created (newest first). Studio remembers your choice.
  • Arrange: in Custom order, drag a tile to where you want it. Favorites arrange within their own row. From the keyboard, Tab to a tile, press Space to pick it up, move it with the arrow keys and press Space to drop it (Esc cancels). Your order is saved to your account, so it's the same on every device.
  • Filter: click Filter to show Favorites only, or only projects with certain colors or icons. Showing 3 of 12 projects appears at the left with Show all, and Clear in the filter box resets it. Filters reset when you leave the page.

Create a project

  1. On the Projects page, click + next to Projects at the top left. (Your very first time, click Start a new project in the welcome box.)
  2. Type a Project Name.
  3. Pick a Project Color and a Project Icon, if you like. You can change both later.
  4. Click Create. The project opens, ready for your first file.
Your first project starts here.
Create New Project.

Colors and icons

Colors and icons are there to help you find your way. Use colors for stages (drafting, revising, querying) or kinds of work, and pick an icon that says what the project is. Hover an icon to see its name: Book, Notes, Journal, Work, Personal, Article, Document, Creative, Ideas, Favorites, Important and Academic.

The colors (all but Default) come from your color theme, so they shift if you change themes in the settings menu. See Appearance.

Names

Project names can't contain these characters: / \ ? % * : | " < >. They would break the matching folder on your BYOK and in backups. Use a dash or a space instead, for example Drafts - 2026.

Favorites

Mark the projects you use most as favorites and they move to the Favorites row at the top.

  1. Hover over a project tile.
  2. Click the star next to its icon. Click the filled star again to remove it from Favorites.
Hover a project for its star and menu.

Rename, recolor or change the icon

  • Rename: hover the tile, click ⋮ (top right) and choose Rename. Type the new name and press Enter.
  • Color: click ⋮ and pick a color in the row of dots. The empty circle is no color.
  • Icon: click the project's icon (top left of the tile) and pick a new one.

Delete a project

  1. Hover the project, click ⋮ and choose Delete project (on mobile, tap ⋯, then Delete Project).
  2. Studio shows how many files the project contains. Click Delete Project & N Files to confirm (on mobile, Delete).
Studio tells you how many files go with it.

Find and switch projects

  • Press Cmd+Shift+O to list your projects and jump to one by typing part of its name.
  • On the Projects page, the search icon (or Cmd+K) searches projects, and, when you're signed in, file names across all of them.
  • On mobile, tap the search icon on the projects screen.

See Command palette and search for more.

Still stuck?

Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
