Wi-Fi sync with your BYOK

Connect your BYOK to Studio, choose which files go to the device, set how line breaks and Markdown travel, and handle renames, deletions and conflicts.

Works inWebDesktopMobile

With a Studio account, your BYOK syncs with Studio over Wi-Fi: text files you write on the device appear in Studio, and text files you link to the device go there, with changes flowing both ways each time it syncs.

This page covers the Studio side. For the device side (setting up Wi-Fi, Sync Setup, Sync Now and the sync light), see the device manual's syncing section.

Wi-Fi sync with a BYOK is part of every Studio account, free included. Without an account, the desktop app can bring your writing in from the card instead.

When it syncs

The BYOK syncs when you turn it off, when you choose Connections › Syncing › Sync Now on the device, or when you press Ctrl+S while writing on it. Studio doesn't need to be open. The Devices page shows when each device last synced.

Connect your BYOK

You'll need your BYOK on Wi-Fi and your device ID, which the BYOK shows when you choose Connections › Syncing › Sync Setup.

  1. Open the account menu (the person icon, top right) and choose Devices.
  2. Click Add Device.
  3. Type the device ID shown on your BYOK (6 or 8 characters) and click Connect.
  4. On the BYOK, select Ok on the screen showing the ID. Connections › Syncing now says Sync Active at the top.

Each device on the Devices page shows its name (click it to rename, like Writing desk), its ID, how many files it syncs, when it last synced, Manage Files, and the date it was linked. The × at its top right unlinks the device from your account.

Files you write on the BYOK sync to Studio automatically. Files you make in Studio go to the device when they're linked to it:

  • New files, automatically: with Auto-link new Studio files on (see below), every new text file you make or import in Studio goes to your BYOK on its next sync. Copies of files aren't auto-linked; link them yourself.
  • From the drawer: right-click a text file, choose Syncing and click Link next to your device. Select several files first to link them all at once.
  • From the file: open the file's options and click Link next to your device under Device Sync.
  • On mobile: long-press the file and tap your device under Syncing.
Right-click › Syncing › Link.

Manage Files on the Devices page lists every file a device syncs, with its project, so you can check at a glance or Unlink files (one at a time or with Select All).

Manage Files: everything this BYOK syncs.

Unlinking a file removes it from the BYOK on the next sync. The file stays in Studio.

Device settings

Below your devices, Device Settings apply to every linked BYOK:

Device Settings on the Devices page.
SettingWhat it does
Auto-link new Studio filesNew text files you make in Studio go to your BYOK automatically. With more than one device, choose No auto-link, One device or All devices. On by default.
Markdown on your BYOKRead device files as Markdown and send edits back as Markdown. See Markdown. Off by default.
Line breaksYour BYOK has one Enter key. New paragraph per line makes every Enter a new, spaced paragraph (best for prose). Lines stay together keeps lines together and starts a paragraph at a blank line (best for dialogue).
Backup syncs to DriveCopy every file that syncs from your BYOK to Google Drive. See Google Drive backup.

Changes to these settings apply to files that sync from then on; nothing already saved is altered.

Renaming, moving and deleting synced files

The BYOK knows files by name and project, so a few things work differently while a file is linked.

  • Renaming: a linked file can't be renamed in Studio. Unlink it and let your BYOK sync once (the file leaves the device), rename it in Studio, then link it again. It goes back to the device under the new name on the next sync. If you link it again before the BYOK has synced, the device keeps the old name.
  • Moving to another project: the same way: unlink it, let the BYOK sync, move the file, then link it again so it lands in the right project on the device.
  • Deleting: to remove a synced file from your BYOK, unlink it in Studio (or delete it in Studio and empty the Trash). If you delete it on the device with Delete File, it comes back on the next sync, because Studio still has it linked.

When a file changed in both places

If the same file was edited on the BYOK and in Studio since the last sync, Studio doesn't guess. The next time you open Studio, File Conflict Detected names the file and shows its Server Version (Studio's) and Device Version; View Content shows the text of either. Choose Keep Server Version, Keep Device Version or Keep Both.

Before every sync from the device, Studio also saves the file's current version in its version history, so nothing is ever overwritten without a copy.

Remove a device

Click the × on the device's card on the Devices page. The device stops syncing with your account; your files in Studio are untouched. (Choosing Connections › Syncing › Disconnect Sync on the BYOK pauses syncing but keeps the device in your account, ready to reconnect.)

Still stuck?

Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
