Command palette and search
Find any file, project or command by typing. Give commands nicknames, set your own shortcuts, and see what works where you are.
Studio can be run almost entirely from the keyboard, and you don't need to memorize anything to start: the command palette finds files, projects and every action by name, and shows the shortcut next to each one so they sink in over time.
Open the palette
Press Cmd+K anywhere, or click the magnifying glass in the header. Type a few letters of what you want (a chapter's name, "focus", "export", "font") and the list narrows as you type. Use ↑/↓ if you need to, and press Enter.
- The list is ordered by where you are: in a manuscript, manuscript actions come first; in an outline, outline actions.
- Files in the project appear as you type their names.
- On the Projects page, the palette finds projects and, when you're signed in, file names across all your projects (type at least two letters).
- The third time you run something from the palette that has a shortcut, Studio mentions the shortcut once.
Jump to a file or project
| Keys | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cmd+O | List the files in this project. Type to filter, Enter to open. |
| Cmd+Shift+O | List your projects and switch to one. |
| Cmd+\ | Open or close the file drawer, with the keyboard in the file list. |
| Go to wiki entry… | From anywhere in a project, jump straight to a wiki entry. |
Nicknames and your own shortcuts
Highlight a command in the palette and press Cmd+. (or → when the search box is empty) to see its options:
- Set an alias… A short word that runs the command instantly. Type it in the palette and the command jumps to the top. Studio comes with a few, such as fm for focus mode and tw for the typewriter.
- Change shortcut… (or Add a shortcut…) Press the keys you want. Studio refuses combinations that would type a character, so your writing is never hijacked, and on the web it refuses keys the browser keeps for itself. If another command already uses the keys, Studio saves them anyway, tells you which command that is, and your new choice wins when both apply.
- Remove shortcut and Open keyboard settings.
The Keyboard tab
Account › Keyboard lists every command with its nickname and keys. Search it, click Change or Add to set keys, Reset all to go back to the defaults, and Export and Import to take your setup to another computer.
In the desktop app the Keyboard tab shows the desktop's shortcuts, which include a few the web browser keeps for itself (Cmd+N, Cmd+W, Cmd+1, Cmd+2).
What works here
Press Cmd+/ to see the shortcuts that work where you are right now, grouped by what they act on. Everything in it is also in the palette.
The full list is in Keyboard shortcuts.
