The mobile app

Studio on iPhone, iPad and Android - how the app is laid out, how touch replaces right-clicks and shortcuts, and what works differently from the web and desktop.

Works inWebDesktopMobile

The mobile app brings your Studio library to your phone and tablet, redesigned for touch. It opens the same projects and files as the web and desktop apps, and nearly every tool is there.

Get it from the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or Google Play (Android phones and tablets), then sign in with your Studio account or tap Create an account. The mobile app needs an account; to write with no account, use the desktop app.

How the app is laid out

  • Projects (the folder icon at the bottom) lists your projects, favorites first. Tap + to make one. The search icon at the top searches every file in your account.
  • Settings (the gear at the bottom) holds your account, appearance, devices, Google Drive and help. See Settings below.
  • Inside a project, three tabs run across the top:

    • Home: New file and your recent files.
    • Files: every folder and file, with search, tag filters, import, new folder, new file and the Trash at the bottom.
    • Pad: the project's Scratch Pad: Notes, Tasks and the Inbox of captures from your BYOK.

Writing on mobile

Open a text file and tap into the text to write. While you're editing, the buttons at the top change:

  • T shows the formatting bar above the keyboard: undo and redo, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, three heading sizes, normal text, bulleted and numbered lists, quotes and line spacing.
  • The chevron puts the keyboard away.
  • The speech bubble shows the file's comments, and on a tablet the panel icon opens a second file beside this one.

In a manuscript, the chapters run across the top as pills; tap one to jump to it. The sliders icon opens the file menu: name, description, word count, zoom, tags, find and replace, export and more.
