Appearance and settings
Dark or light, high contrast, 27 color themes, eight writing fonts, line spacing, margins, zoom, focus mode, full screen and the rest of the settings menu.
Studio's look is yours to set. Everything here changes how Studio shows things on this computer or browser; none of it changes your files, and your BYOK isn't affected.
The settings menu
Click the gear at the top right.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dark Mode | Switch between dark and light. |
| Keyboard Shortcuts | Show the shortcuts that work where you are (Cmd+/). |
| High Contrast | Stronger borders and text, for easier reading. |
| Theme | Choose one of 27 color themes. |
| Writing Font | The typeface for your words. |
| Focus Mode | Hide everything but your writing (Cmd+Shift+F). See Focus mode. |
| Fullscreen | Fill the screen. |
| Word Count | Show or hide the word count at the bottom right of files. |
| Scratchpad | Show or hide the Scratch Pad's notepad button. |
| Change Folder, Backup Syncs to Drive | With Google Drive connected: where backups go, and whether files from your BYOK are backed up automatically. |
Dark and light
Studio starts dark. Turn Dark Mode off in the gear menu for light, or run Switch to light mode from the palette.
Color themes
A color theme sets the five colors Studio uses for project tiles, folders, tags, cards, highlights and color labels. Choose Theme in the gear menu and pick from 27, from Default and Sunset to Woodland, Charcoal and Autumn Coral. Each has its own dark and light version.
Because colors come from the theme, changing it recolors everything at once, so your color system stays intact.
Your writing font
Your words don't have to be set in the same typeface as the buttons around them. Choose a writing font from the T button in a file's toolbar (or a manuscript's header), from Writing Font in the gear menu, or by typing a face's name in the palette.
| Face | What it's like |
|---|---|
| Studio | The face Studio's own interface uses. Clean and even. |
| System | Your computer's own typeface: San Francisco on a Mac, Segoe UI on Windows. |
| Atkinson Hyperlegible | Made by the Braille Institute so every letter is easy to tell apart. Worth a try with High Contrast. |
| Literata | A serif designed for long reading on screens. A good first serif. |
| Crimson Pro | An old-style serif in the Garamond tradition: a page that looks like a novel. |
| Lora | A warm, contemporary serif. |
| Courier Prime | The screenwriter's Courier, redrawn for screens. |
| IBM Plex Mono | A clean monospace, for drafts that should look like drafts. |
The writing font is used for everything you write: text files, manuscripts, wiki pages, cards, grid tiles, outline rows and Scratch Pad notes. Menus and buttons stay in Studio's face. Every font is built into Studio, so it works offline, and Same as editor in Word and PDF exports carries it into your documents.
Line spacing, margins and zoom
From the same T panel:
- Line spacing: Default (1.5), Single or Double.
- Margins (text files): Narrow, Default or Wide.
Zoom is set per file in its options, so a dense research file and a chapter can each have their own size. On mobile, zoom is in the file menu.
These stay on this computer or browser and don't follow you to other devices.
Still stuck?
Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
