Version history and the Trash
Every file keeps earlier versions you can compare and restore, and deleted files wait in the Trash. Here's how to get anything back.
Studio keeps your writing safe in layers: undo for the last few minutes, version history for the last month, and the Trash for files you delete.
Version history
Every text file, wiki, card stack, grid and outline keeps a history of earlier versions. A manuscript's history lives in its chapters, since each one is a text file.
Studio saves a version:
- automatically once a day when the file has changed,
- before your BYOK syncs a new version of the file, or before the desktop app brings one in from the card,
- when you ask, with Save checkpoint in the file's options (or Create Checkpoint in the history window),
- before you restore an older version, so restoring can always be undone,
- and before switching a grid to the new grid, kept for good.
Each file keeps its newest 30 versions. Versions older than 30 days are cleared out once the file has at least 10 newer ones, so a file you rarely touch keeps its older history. The version saved before switching a grid is never cleared. Version history is free on every plan.
See and restore a version
- Open the file's options (the sliders icon, top left) and click the history button, or right-click the file in the drawer and choose Version History.
- Click a version to read it. A badge says why it was saved, such as Daily Backup, Pre-Device Sync or Manual Snapshot. The trash button on a version deletes it.
- Compare with Current shows what changed; Restore This Version brings it back.
- Long-press the file in the Files tab and tap Version History.
- Tap a version to read it, then restore it if it's the one you want.
Cards, grids, wikis and outlines show a summary of what each version holds rather than a text preview.
Undo
Cmd+Z undoes and Cmd+Shift+Z redoes, in text, cards, grids and outlines. While you're typing, undo undoes the typing. Undo lasts for the session; for anything older, use version history.
The Trash
Deleting a file or folder moves it to the project's Trash:
- Open it with the trash can in the file drawer (on mobile, Trash at the bottom of the Files tab).
- Right-click a file there and choose Restore to put it back where it was, or Permanently Delete to remove it for good. Empty Trash clears everything.
A manuscript or outline that pointed at a trashed file shows it as missing until you restore it. A manuscript whose outline was trashed reconnects when you restore the outline.
Still stuck?
Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
