Tools and fonts on your BYOK

The desktop app's BYOK Library puts Toolbox tools and Font Library fonts on your BYOK in one click, without touching your writing or your tools' saved data.

Works inWebDesktopMobile

Getting a tool or a font onto your BYOK used to mean a download and a careful drag into the right folder on the card. The desktop app does it for you: connect your BYOK, open the library, and click Add.

Open the library

  1. Connect your BYOK by USB in Disk Mode, or put its card in a reader (see Bring writing in).
  2. In the BYOK connected panel, click Tools and fonts. Or press Cmd+K and type tools.

The library has two tabs, Tools and Fonts, and a header that says which BYOK is connected, its firmware and how much room is left on the card. You can browse with no BYOK connected; the Add buttons wait until one is.

Tools

The Tools tab is the Toolbox. Filter by official or community tools, and by the ones you run with Ctrl+T and a letter or the ones that run while you type. Click a tool to read everything its web page says: what it does, how to use it, and what it's allowed to touch.

The Tools tab.

Above the details, On this BYOK lists the tool's files and what will happen to each when you click: will be added, will be updated or will be kept. Nothing is written until you click, and nothing the box didn't mention.

  1. Click Add (or Update). Studio downloads the tool, checks it and copies it into the card's Scripts folder.
  2. Eject the BYOK from the panel and restart it. The new tool is in your Ctrl+T list.

Your saved notes, shortcuts and word lists

Some tools keep a data file next to themselves: your notes, your shortcuts, your word list. The library treats these with care:

  • First time: adding a tool adds its data file too, so it has somewhere to save.
  • Already using it: an existing data file is always kept. Updating a tool replaces the tool and leaves your data alone.
  • Starting fresh: a data file's row has Replace with a fresh copy…, which asks first and saves a copy of your current file on your computer before it writes.
  • Shared files: a data file another tool on your card uses is never replaced.

When a newer version of an official tool is available, it's marked Update available. If you've edited a tool yourself, it's marked On your BYOK (edited), and replacing it saves your version first.

Fonts

The Fonts tab is the Font Library. Search, sort and filter by style and size; each row shows the font's name drawn in the font, its size, and how many lines fit on the BYOK's screen. Click a font for a preview exactly as the BYOK draws it; type your own words in the sample box and click Redraw (Cmd+Enter).

The Fonts tab.

Click Add and the font goes into the card's Fonts folder. Eject, restart the BYOK, and choose it from the device's font list.

Good to know

  • The library needs the internet the first time it opens and each time you click Add. What it fetched is kept, so you can browse offline.
  • Tools need firmware 1.2 or later; the header shows yours. Fonts work on any firmware.
  • Studio only writes inside the Scripts and Fonts folders, and never deletes anything there. Your writing and everything else on the card are untouched.
  • Tools and fonts you copied onto the card by hand show up too.
  • No account is needed.

These fonts are for the BYOK's screen. The fonts you write in inside Studio are a separate setting; see Appearance.

Still stuck?

Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
