Update #18: A Linux Beta and Smoother Upgrades

Update Focus

The desktop app now runs on Linux as a beta. Upgrading from the desktop app is also smoother, and a few things that got in the way are fixed.

New: Linux (Beta)

Two downloads: a .deb for Ubuntu, Debian and Mint, and an AppImage for other Linux, on 64-bit Intel and AMD computers
The whole app: every tool, offline with no account, the same as on Mac and Windows
Updates: the AppImage updates itself. With the .deb, the update installs when you click Restart now, and Linux asks for your password

Web & Desktop

Upgrading from the desktop app: Upgrade now opens checkout in your browser instead of getting stuck on loading. The app watches for your purchase, then thanks you and turns on sync
Manuscript export: no more blank exports. The export popup starts on Word, and files are named after your manuscript
Expired sign-ins: the desktop app asks you to sign in again as soon as sync is refused, instead of minutes later
Delete Account: a mistyped password now says “Password is incorrect” and no longer signs you out
Sign-up: a server problem shows a plain message instead of a page of code
Update card: a new See what’s new button opens this page

Update #17: A New Projects Page, Drag & Drop, and a Big Mobile Update

Update Focus

A new Projects page you can arrange, sort and filter, with a shortcut back to whatever you were writing. You can now drag files from the drawer onto manuscripts, outlines and your text, the desktop app gets spelling settings, and the mobile app catches up with the web and desktop apps. The desktop app installs the update on its own.

New: Your Projects Page, Your Way

Arrange: drag projects into your own order (or use the keyboard: Space to pick one up, the arrow keys to move it). Your order is the same on every device
Sort and filter: sort by your own order, Recently edited, Name or Date created, and filter by favorites, color or icon
Continue writing: a card at the top takes you straight back to the file you last wrote in, whichever project and device it was on

New: Drag Files Out of the Drawer

Onto a manuscript: text files become chapters right where you drop them. Drop a folder to add every text file in it
Onto an outline: each file becomes a linked row; a folder becomes a heading with its files underneath
Into your text: drop a file into a chapter or wiki entry to add a link to it
A gold line shows where things will land, and the drawer slides out of the way while you drag

Outlines & Manuscripts

A linked file that moved to another project now says where it went, with Bring it back and Unlink, instead of showing as missing
Moving a manuscript to another project takes its chapters with it, and Studio checks with you first
Copying a manuscript copies its chapters too, so the copy and the original never change each other

The Studio Guide

A new Studio guide covers every tool, with links to the right page from the shortcut sheet, version history, conflicts, captures, devices and the command palette

Improved & Fixed

Markdown: rendering Markdown in a file keeps the formatting you already have, and one Undo takes it all back
Names: characters Studio can’t save in a name are caught as you type, instead of failing to sync later
Smaller fixes, including the dashboard’s Wikis panel now counting entries inside categories

Desktop

Spelling: right-click a misspelled word for suggestions or Add to Dictionary. In Account › Spelling you can choose the languages you write in (Windows), turn spell check off and manage your dictionary. This fixes correct words in other languages being underlined in red
Sync: changes your account couldn’t accept are listed in plain words in Account › Sync, with Retry and Discard
Files imported while offline no longer disappear from the drawer while sync catches up, and folder names from your BYOK with unusual characters now import cleanly

Mobile App

Version 1.1.0 of the mobile app brings it level with the web and desktop apps. Direct download links are on the Studio page.

Filter, sort and Arrange projects in your own order, shared with the web and desktop apps

Web & Desktop

Comments: clicking Comment puts the cursor in the comment box instead of leaving it in your text
Outline: a chapter dragged past the rows under another chapter now lands between the two chapters
Manuscript: a manuscript that follows an outline keeps the outline’s latest order, even with the outline closed
Split view: the divider between two files stays under the pointer and is easier to grab
Import: imported files no longer keep .docx, .txt or .md in their names

Desktop

Comments now work offline and with no account
Moving files to the Trash, restoring them and moving them between folders now stick offline and with no account
Library backups now include your Scratch Pad notes and comments

Update #15: Polish After the Desktop Launch

Update Focus

A small follow-up to Studio 1.0, with fixes and polish from your first feedback. These changes are in the web app and the desktop app, where the update installs on its own.

Improved

Outline: a row and its linked file now keep the same name. Rename either one and the other follows, as long as their names matched
Focus mode: hides more of the interface, with the controls along each edge coming back when you move the pointer there
Focus mode: closing the command palette or a menu with Esc no longer leaves focus mode
Wiki: entry pages adjust more smoothly to narrow windows and split view

Fixed

Grid: the color palette now works for sticky notes as well as tiles, and sticky notes can be deleted from the toolbar
Grid: exports include everything in the new grid, including your latest edits
Word counts and wiki mentions now include text written in the new grid

Studio is now a desktop app for Mac and Windows, and every feature is free to use offline on your computer, no account needed. Studio Premium adds sync with the web app, the mobile app and your BYOK. With Studio 1.0, several of Studio’s core tools have also been reworked and many new features added, making this the largest Studio update ever.

Update #13: Exports, Find & Replace & Mobile

Released August 24, 2026

Update Focus

This update adds exports for cards, grids, outlines, and wikis; file search across all projects; find and replace in text files and manuscripts; version history for more file types; and undo/redo improvements. The mobile app is part of this release as well. The iOS update may take an additional day or two before it is available.

New: Studio Exports

Export more of your Studio work for backup or use in other apps. These preserve content, not a 1:1 Studio copy
Card stacks: File options → Export Card Stack downloads a spreadsheet (.csv), one row per card
Grids: File options → Export Grid downloads a spreadsheet (.csv) arranged to roughly match your layout
Outlines: File options → Export Outline as plain text (.txt) or Markdown (.md)
Wikis: File options → Export Wiki as .docx, Markdown, or plain text. You can also export a single entry. .docx keeps formatting best; images and interactive links may not fully transfer

Search Files Across All Projects

Search your files from the Projects page without opening a project first. Click the search icon next to the + button, or press Ctrl+K / Cmd+K
Filter by file type, Favorites, or a specific project. Selecting a result opens that file
Matches file names only — searching inside file contents is not included yet

Find and Replace

Text files and manuscripts now have Find and replace. Open it from the toolbar, the manuscript header, or ⌘F / Ctrl+F (⌘⌥F / Ctrl+H to replace)
Step through matches, replace one at a time, or replace all. Match case and whole word are available
In a manuscript, search covers every page in the binder. Replace all confirms at 20 or more matches

Grid: Drag, Drop, and Connections

Improved tile dragging so moving tiles around the grid feels more predictable
Smoother experience when drawing and using connection lines

Undo and Redo

Cards: undo/redo is now in the file header (Ctrl/⌘Z, Ctrl/⌘Shift+Z, Ctrl+Y)
Grid and outline: the same keyboard shortcuts now work. Outline no longer records a history step just for focusing a line
While typing, ⌘Z undoes the typing, not the last document change. History is session-only

Version History for More File Types

Version history now covers wikis, card stacks, grids, and outlines, not just text files
Changed files are backed up daily. You can still create a checkpoint or restore an earlier version at any time
Structured files show a snapshot summary instead of a text preview. Manuscripts and device sync are unchanged

Editor Polish

Dark mode caret uses the gold accent and is slightly thicker in both themes
Clicking to the right of a line in a text file now puts the caret at the end of that line

Mobile App

This release also includes updates to the mobile app. The iOS update may require an additional day or two before it is available. Direct download links are on the Studio page.

Comments

The comment system from the web app is now on mobile. It works with manuscripts and text files, the same way it does on the web
Tap a highlighted passage to open that comment; the comments list now scrolls to the one you tapped
Long-press a highlight to place the cursor and edit the text. A short tap still opens comments
Editing text inside a highlight keeps the comment attached to that passage

Device ID & Settings

The mobile app now supports 8-character device IDs, rather than the previous 6
Device settings for your BYOK now match the web app, including those related to auto-sync

Text Editor & Manuscripts

Line spacing: Default, Single, or Double. Default matches Studio (1.5). Your choice is remembered on this device
Line breaks: paragraphs from the BYOK now show with space between them in manuscript view and in the text editor, the same way they do in Studio. A single Enter is treated as a new paragraph (or as a line break if that is your device setting)

Find and Replace, History & Undo

Find and replace is now on mobile, the same as the web app. Access it from the file menu of text or manuscript files
Expanded version history now includes historical versions of grid, wiki, card, and outline files, in addition to the text file version history that already existed
An undo/redo system has been added to the card file editor, and the undo/redo system of the outline file editor has been upgraded

Update #12: Faster Long Files, Smarter Navigation & Scratch Pad Polish

Released August 1, 2026

Update Focus

This update improves performance in long files, reworks Studio’s navigation, adds a faster way to build manuscripts, and includes polish for the Scratch Pad, Grid, and theming.

Performance: Built for Long Files

Fast typing in big documents: typing in large text files and manuscripts is now dramatically more responsive, even at 100,000+ words
Regression fixed: part of this slowdown crept in with a previous update. That’s been rooted out along with several older bottlenecks, so long files should feel better than ever, not just “back to normal”

Smarter Navigation

The back button now goes back: with a document open, the back arrow closes your document and returns you to the project instead of jumping all the way out to the project list
Breadcrumb header: the header now shows Projects / Your Project, so you can always see where you are and jump straight to your projects with one click
Devices page returns you to your work: opening Devices no longer navigates you away. It opens over your current page and closes right back to it, with your open documents untouched

Manuscript: Add Files in Bulk

Multi-select picker: the “Add Existing File” picker now lets you select many files at once instead of one at a time
Clear ordering: numbered badges show exactly what order your selections will be added in. Shift-click selects a whole range
One-click add: confirm once and everything is added in a single, reliable operation
Cleaner picker: the picker is now a centered dialog like Studio’s other windows, instead of a popup anchored to the page

Scratch Pad Refinements

Two focused tabs: the Scratch Pad is now just Tasks and Notes. The old “All” tab mixed both types and forced clunky raw-text editing for checklists. Each tab now edits its content the right way
Edit tasks from the quick access panel: click any task’s text to edit it in place, press Enter to split into a new task, and delete tasks with the new hover trashcan button, all without opening the full Scratch Pad
Steady panel size: the quick access panel now has a fixed height instead of growing and shrinking with its contents, so it always opens looking the same
Centered layout: on large screens, notes, tasks, and captures now sit in a comfortable centered column instead of stretching to the far left edge

Grid: No More Accidental Tiles

Click to deselect, double-click to create: clicking empty grid space now simply deselects, with no more accidentally spawning tiles. Double-click an empty cell (or use the subtle + button) to create one, and drag to size it, same as always

Other Improvements

Recent files in the drawer: a new Recents filter in the drawer’s Show section lists your most recently updated files, right next to Favorites
Pasted text matches Studio: text pasted from other apps now adopts Studio’s formatting. No more invisible white text pasted from dark-mode apps. Pasted text always follows your theme, while bold, italics, lists, and links are kept
Theme picker in dark mode: the Choose Theme menu now previews each theme’s actual dark-mode colors when Studio is in dark mode

Bug Fixes & Stability

Word count goals in text files: session goals now count words typed in the dedicated text file window, not just in the manuscript, and words are never counted twice across the two views
Manuscript navigator pills: section pills no longer get squished and cut off when a manuscript has many sections. The list scrolls instead
Paragraph spacing in manuscripts: device-synced text files now show proper paragraph spacing in manuscript view, matching how they look in document view. This also fixes strange Enter and Backspace behavior when editing those files in a manuscript
Word exports keep your paragraphs: exporting to Word no longer “glues” paragraphs together. Blank lines between paragraphs now become real paragraph breaks in the DOCX, so formatting one paragraph doesn’t drag its neighbors along

This update is wide-ranging: new Device Settings on the Devices page, line spacing options for manuscript and text files, and a large round of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements across Studio.

New: Device Settings

Devices page controls: a new Device Settings section lets you set default behaviors for how Studio and your BYOK work together
Line break handling: choose how line breaks are handled between the device and Studio
Auto-sync new files: control whether newly created Studio text files automatically sync to your BYOK
Default change: newly created Studio text files now sync to the BYOK by default. Prefer the previous behavior? Turn the setting off in Device Settings

New: Line Spacing

Manuscript and text files: choose between the default 1.5 spacing, single spacing, or double spacing
Visual only: these options are for readability in Studio and do not change the underlying file format

Bug Fixes & Stability

Text and manuscript consistency: fixed cases where changes did not always appear consistently between text files and manuscript files
Comment panel: improved so it respects zoom levels and is more stable overall
Word export: exporting to Word now produces properly formatted DOCX files
Cursor jumps: fixed bugs where the cursor would sometimes jump to the beginning or end of a manuscript or text file
File renaming: improved the file renaming process for a smoother, more reliable experience
Captures stability: fixed cases where captures were not always added to the Scratch Pad according to their expected behavior

Update #10: Captures, Comments & the Scratch Pad

Update Focus

The Scratch Pad now has two tabs: Notes (everything it already did) and Captures (new). Write ::card, ::wiki, ::outline, or ::comment in any text file on your BYOK and Studio turns those lines into structured items on sync, ready to drop into the right file with one click, or routed there automatically if you set up the rules. A new comment system anchors notes to file content alongside the text, with a Google-Docs-style column.

New: The Capture System

Device commands: ::card, ::wiki, ::outline, and ::meta recognized on text files synced from your BYOK
Captures inbox: a new tab in the Scratch Pad where structured items wait for triage, with type filters, search, group tiles, and per-type previews
Default destinations: set a default card stack, wiki, and outline per project so captures land where you expect
Handle mappings: bind @handles to specific files and sections. ::card @worldbuilding routes itself
Auto-route toggle: when on, captures with a resolvable destination skip the inbox entirely on sync
Custom commands: map any non-reserved ::token to a built-in capture type with an optional default handle
File Mode: a file beginning with ::as outline becomes a whole outline file in Studio

New: The Comment System

From the device: [bracketed text] ::comment your note becomes an anchored highlight + comment card in Studio
Positional comments: a bare ::comment line attaches to the paragraph above it
From the web: select text in Studio and add a comment directly. No device required
Google-Docs-style column: comment cards live in a column beside the file, aligned to their highlights
Survives edits: highlights re-anchor by snippet match on every re-sync; orphaned comments pile in a section at the bottom so nothing is lost

Scratch Pad: A New Home

Header Inbox button: one-click access to the Scratch Pad from any project, next to the Settings gear. Remembers your last-used tab
Drawer Inbox icon: a second entry point at the top of the project drawer that opens Captures directly
Two tabs: Notes (everything you've always had) and Captures (new). The floating notepad button still works exactly as before
Source-file links: every device-synced entry (note or capture) shows a small "from FileName" link on hover so you can jump back to the original text file

Comprehensive Snapshots: Store up to 20 versions of each text file, preserved for up to 30 days, giving you flexibility to recover previous iterations of your work
Multiple Backup Methods: Create snapshots manually at any time, benefit from automatic daily backups when files change, or rely on automatic pre-upload backups before your BYOK syncs a new version

The two main focuses of this update were the internal linking system which allows file types to be interconnected through links, as well as an emphasis on quality of life by fixing bugs, providing more peace of mind through robust data-loss prevention, and polishing the app with more user options like color-based themes.

- • Manuscripts now allow you to add new files rather than just picking existing files

- • Word count goals for individual sessions with multiple progress monitoring options including progress bars

This update is by far the biggest update for the Writing Studio yet and is aimed at addressing many of the points of feedback provided by early users: The main things we focused on this time around were the brand new manuscript tool, overhauling certain tools to be more intuitive and powerful, and a number of visual upgrades for new users to have an easier time navigating. In addition, we have addressed MANY bugs and quality of life reports.
