Comments

Leave notes in the margin of text files and manuscripts, from Studio or straight from your BYOK, and edit, resolve or delete them.

Works inWebDesktopMobile

Comments are notes pinned to a passage: "this argument starts too late", "check the date", "cut?". They sit in a column beside the text, lined up with the words they're about, and they never become part of your writing or your exports.

Comments work in text files and manuscripts.

A comment in the margin, lined up with its passage.

Add a comment

  1. Select the words the comment is about.
  2. Click Comment in the bar that appears over the selection.
  3. Type your note and click Comment (or press Cmd+Enter). Esc cancels.

The passage is highlighted and the comment appears in the Comments column. A small badge on each comment says where it came from, such as Web for comments made in Studio and Device for ones written on your BYOK.

Read, edit and resolve

  • Click a highlighted passage to bring its comment forward (on mobile, tap it; the list scrolls to that comment).
  • Click ⋯ on a comment for Edit, Resolve and Delete. A resolved comment can be brought back with Unresolve.
  • Hide or show the column with the panel button at the top of it. In a narrow window or split view, comments fold into a button with a count.

Editing the text inside a highlight keeps the comment attached. If the passage is deleted altogether, the comment isn't lost: it moves to the Unanchored section at the bottom of the column.

Comments from your BYOK

You can leave comments while you write on your BYOK, and they arrive in Studio when the device syncs:

The forge groaned awake at dawn. [bound to bloodline] ::comment needs more grounding
  • Put the words in [square brackets], then ::comment and your note, on the same line or the next one: the bracketed words become the highlight.
  • A line with only ::comment and a note attaches to the paragraph above it.

Comments from the device need Wi-Fi sync and arrive with the Device badge. When the file syncs, the brackets and the ::comment lines are taken out of your text, so it reads clean in Studio. The full syntax is in the capture reference.

Still stuck?

Send us a note from Contact Support, or choose Report Bug in Studio’s account menu so your app version comes along with it. For the device itself, see the BYOK device manual.
