The file options panel

Every open file has a file options button at the top left of its header (the sliders icon). It gathers what you can do with that file. The exact contents depend on the kind of file; a text file's look like this:

File options for a text file, signed in on the web.
PartWhat it does
StarAdd the file to, or remove it from, your favorites.
Save checkpointSave this version in the file's history right now. See Version history.
Restore previous versionOpen the file's version history.
DescriptionA short note about the file, up to 200 characters. It shows in the drawer's Details view and when you add files to a manuscript.
ZoomMake this file's text larger or smaller. Each file remembers its own zoom on this computer or browser. Reset goes back to 100%.
TagsAdd Tag and Remove Tag.
MarkdownText files: On or Off for this file. See Markdown.
ExportDownload the file. Text files offer DOCX, PDF, MD and TXT; other kinds have their own formats (Export).
Device SyncText files, signed in: link the file to your BYOK, or unlink it.
Google DriveText files, with Drive connected: Backup now and the file's backup status.

Manuscripts, outlines, wikis, cards and grids add their own items, such as Export Manuscript or Find & Replace.

Rename a file

  • Double-click the file's name in its header and type, or
  • right-click it in the drawer and choose Rename, or
  • press Cmd+K and run Rename file.

Files linked to a BYOK keep their name until you unlink them. See Wi-Fi sync.

Tags

Tags label files across folders: Act One, Needs revision, Research, Sent to editor. A file can have as many as you like, and each tag has a color.

Each tag shows as a colored dot after the file's name, in the file's header and in the dashboard's lists, so a file with three tags has three dots. After four dots (three on the dashboard) the rest show as a count, like +2. Hover the dots to see the tag names.

Create and manage tags

  • In the drawer: the Tags panel on the right lists the project's tags. Type in Find or create tags… and press Enter to make a new one. Hover a tag for its color and delete buttons.
  • While making a file: pick tags in the Add Tags row of the new-file dialog.

Deleting a tag removes it from every file; the files themselves aren't touched.

Tag a file

  • In the file's options, click Add Tag (or Remove Tag).
  • Or right-click the file in the drawer and choose Tags.
  • On mobile, long-press the file and tap the tags you want.

Find files by tag

  • In the drawer, click the tag icon under Show and tick tags in the Filter by tags list, or click a tag in the Tags panel. Only files with those tags stay in view.
  • On the dashboard, the Tags part lists every tag; click one to see its files.
  • Click the dots after a file's name for a list of its tags, then click a tag to open the drawer showing only files with that tag.
  • On mobile, tap a tag chip above the file list on the Files tab.

Favorites

Star the files you open most. Favorites appear in the dashboard's Favorites list and under Show › Favorites in the drawer.

  • Click the star in the file's options, or
  • right-click the file in the drawer and choose Favorite, or
  • on mobile, long-press the file and tap Favorite.

Projects have favorites too; see Projects.
