Studio Captures

Send writing from the BYOK into Studio, without memorizing the marks. Studio Captures does two things: it turns selected text into a capture in one move, and it checks your file before you sync.

For starting a new capture from nothing (a card you haven't written yet), use the Expander shortcuts (scard, swiki, stask…). Studio Captures is for text that already exists.

With text selected

Select some text, then Ctrl+T, s:

• Comment on selection: brackets the words and adds ::comment, cursor ready for your note.
• Card from selection: asks for a handle, then a title (Escape skips either). Puts ::card above your text and the closing blank line below it.
• Task list from selection: every line you selected becomes a - item.
• Wiki entry from selection: asks for a handle and a title, like a card.
• Note from selection: puts ::note above your text.

With nothing selected

Ctrl+T, s:

• Comment on this paragraph: a ::comment line under the paragraph you're in.
• File details: asks for a folder, tags, and a description, each optional. Only what you answer is written. Applies to this file when you sync.
• Check captures: see below.
• Whole file is an outline: marks an empty file so Studio turns the whole thing into an outline. The file must be empty.

Comments

Select the words, choose Comment on selection, and you get

Type your comment. The comment runs to the end of the line, so if your sentence carried on after the selected words, press Enter after the comment to keep those words in your writing.

Handles

A handle is the @word that tells Studio where a capture goes, like ::card @plot. Studio decides what @plot means; the BYOK only writes it. Handles are letters, digits, - and _, no spaces. If you type one Studio can't read, it's left off and you're told.

Check captures

Run it before you sync. It reads the whole file and tells you what Studio will see ("2 cards, 1 task"), then takes you to anything Studio would misread, one at a time:

• Words on the same line as a command (::card The betrayal). Studio would file that as a plain note.
• A handle with a space or other odd character.
• A blank line right after a command. Studio skips it and takes your next paragraph as the body.
• A command with nothing under it.
• Outline lines that aren't ^, ^^, --- or - bullets.
• ::meta lines that aren't key: value.
• A ::comment with no text.
